From August 10-13, the Town of Burin will host the
2010 Burin Peninsula Regional Games thanks in part to a $10,000
investment from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. The funding
will be used to assist with the costs associated with hosting the games.
"The Regional Games Program allows our province's
youth to participate in organized, yet non-competitive sport
programming," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation. "It is part of the Provincial Government's
efforts to provide our young people with opportunities to engage in
physical activity, and encourage them to continue a healthy, active
lifestyle throughout their lives."
The $100,000 Regional Games Program, administered
through Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador, provides 10 communities
with up to $10,000 to provide youth, aged 11-18, with an opportunity to
participate in multi-sport events within their regions.
"The Burin Peninsula Regional Games provide a great
opportunity for the youth of the region to showcase their athletic
abilities, while developing many new friendships," said the Honourable
Clyde Jackman, MHA for Burin-Placentia West. "I congratulate the host
committee for their hard work and dedication, and wish the participants,
coaches and volunteers good luck during the week."
