The Folk Arts Society has received $25,000 through the
Provincial Government's 2010 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP)
to assist with the presentation of the 34th Annual
Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, beginning today (Friday, August
6) and running through the weekend.
"Each year, the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk
Festival brings thousands of people together to celebrate the best in
traditional and contemporary folk music and dance," said the Honourable
Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The
Provincial Government recognizes the importance of presenting and
promoting our cultural assets, and we are proud to continue to support
the organizers, performers and volunteers who, year after year, continue
to make this event a renowned success."
The Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival is the
second oldest continuously running folk festival in Canada.
"The Folk Festival simply wouldn't be possible without
support like this," said Anita Best, President of the Folk Arts Society.
"It is crucial to our continuing success. It not only provides the Folk
Arts Society with a means to support folk arts throughout the province,
it allows us to grow the festival year after year. You don't have to
look any further than this weekend for evidence of that, as we are
expecting a record number of patrons."
