The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, today announced that recreation programs in the
Cape St. Francis area have received a total of $11,385 through the 2010
Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program.
"An investment in recreation programming is an
investment in the present and future health of our citizens," said
Minister French. "The Community Recreation Development Grant Program is
designed to assist municipalities and recreation organizations, in
communities of less than 6,000, to develop, deliver and promote
recreational programs. As such, it is an integral part of the Provincial
Government's effort to encourage active healthy lifestyles, particularly
in the more rural areas of the province."
Investments in the Cape St. Francis area are as
follows:
Pouch Cove Recreation Commission- $4,015;
Town of Flatrock - $3,850; and,
Town of Logy-Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove
- $3,520.
"The overall well-being of residents is a priority of
our government, and this grant program is yet another proactive measure
towards ensuring a healthy population," said Cape St. Francis MHA Kevin
Parsons. "Improved access and supportive, appealing programs combine to
entice participation in physical activity among Newfoundlanders and
Labradorians of all ages."
Community Recreation Development Grant applications
are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in
the province's recreation and sport strategy,
Active, Healthy
Newfoundland and Labrador
(2007). These priorities include providing
increased access to programming for all residents, making the best use
of community facilities, building community capacities, and promoting
the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially
women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with
disabilities.
