Provincial Government Invests Over $15,000 in Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune Recreation

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that recreation programs in the Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune area have received $15,180 in support through the 2010 Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program.

"The Provincial Government is committed, through a variety of recreation and sports programs and initiatives, to providing residents with increased opportunities to participate in a healthy, active lifestyle," said Minister French. "This investment is an investment in our people, and in their present and future health and well-being. Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities of 6,000 and less, and are therefore of particular benefit to people living in rural areas of the province."

The 2010 Community Recreation Development Grant Program is providing more than $576,000 to over 180 municipalities and recreational organizations.

Investments in the Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune area are as follows:

  • Harbour Breton Recreation Commission — $4,400;
  • Pool's Cove Recreation Committee — $3,245;
  • St. Alban's Recreation Committee — $3.190;
  • Town of Hermitage — $2,035;
  • Seal Cove, Fortune Bay Recreation Committee — $1,320; and,
  • Town of McCallum — $990.

"I am extremely pleased with this support for our local volunteer recreation committee members who work tirelessly in our communities to ensure our physical well-being and fitness," said Fortune Bay-Cape La Hune MHA Tracey Perry. "These grants are a tremendous support and mean so much to our rural communities."

Community Recreation Development Grants are available to communities of 6,000 or less. Applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the province's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). These priorities include providing increased access to programming for all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building community capacities, and promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing recreation and sport programming and to introduce new initiatives. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
