Ferryland Region Receives $21,505 for Recreation Programs

Recreation programs in the Ferryland area have received a total of $21,505 in support through the Community Recreation Development Grant (CRDG) Program.

"The benefits of living an active, healthy lifestyle are well documented," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This is part of the Provincial Government's efforts to support municipalities and recreation committees, particularly those in rural areas, which encourage residents of all ages to become engaged in programming which contributes to their overall well-being."

The 2010 CRDG Program, which is designed to assist with the cost of delivering active-living programs, is providing more than $576,000 to over 180 communities with a population of 6,000 or fewer throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

Investments in the Ferryland area are as follows:

  • Bay Bulls-Bauline Athletic Association - $5,390;
  • Mobile Recreation Committee - $4,125;
  • Town of Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove - $3,905;
  • Town of Cape Broyle - $3,025;
  • Town of Aquaforte - $2,970;
  • Town of Ferryland - $1,485; and,
  • Town of Calvert - $605.

"This funding plays an important role in the development and maintenance of recreation programs in rural communities," said Ferryland MHA Keith Hutchings. "I want to acknowledge all those recreational committee volunteers in the Ferryland area who give so freely of their time to ensure healthy recreational activities exist."

Community Recreation Development Grant applications are considered based on their alignment with the priorities outlined in the province's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). These priorities include providing increased access to programming for all residents; making the best use of community facilities; building community capacity to deliver recreational programming, and promoting the inclusion of traditionally under-represented groups, especially women and girls, seniors, Aboriginal people, and those with disabilities.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing recreation and sport programming and introduce new initiatives. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development.
