Writers' Alliance Receives Provincial
Government Support
The Writers' Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador has received
$80,000 in operational support through the Provincial Government's 2010
Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, said the investment supports the Writers' Alliance 2010-11
activities, including professional development initiatives and other
programs beneficial to the development of the literary industry in the
province.
"This support is intended to assist and promote the wealth of
emerging and established literary talent in Newfoundland and Labrador,"
said Minister French. "In addition to providing financial assistance to
the Writers' Alliance, the CEDP also supports the work of the literary
sector through financial assistance to the local publishing industry, as
well as to individual writers for professional development and market
access activities."
"The funds we receive through CEDP are essential to our
organization," said Writers' Alliance Executive Director Théa Morash.
"CEDP makes it possible for us to continue many of our important
programs and services, such as our Spring Tides Reading Series and our
Manuscript Evaluation Service, and provides much-needed operational
support as well."
The 2010 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) is providing
$1.2 million for support to the professional arts sector, and about
$1.27 million to the heritage sector, for a total of almost $2.5
million.
CEDP applications are considered based on the strength of business
plans, vision, and potential for development within the sector. For more
