Province Supports Harbour Main Area Heritage Groups
Heritage organizations in the Harbour Main area have received a total
$10,490 in operational support through the Provincial Government's
Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).
"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador acknowledges the
significance of safeguarding our heritage and finding ways to present it
to residents and visitors alike," said the Honourable Terry French,
Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The hard work and
dedication that residents put into preserving local heritage is a
testament to their pride in their communities and in their history."
Investments in the region are as follows:
- Cupids Historical Society - $4,580;
- Brigus Historical and Conservation Society - $2,110;
- Avondale Heritage and Conservation Foundation - $1,750;
- Turks Gut Heritage Conservation Inc. - $1,040; and,
- Landfall Trust (Brigus) - $1,010.
"Newfoundland and Labrador has a long and storied past, filled with
colourful characters and milestone events," said the Honourable Tom
Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main. "Through investments like these, we
help to preserve our cultural tapestry so that we, and the generations
that will follow us, retain a sense of where we have come from as our
society and culture progresses into the future."
The 2010 CEDP is providing $1.27 million for operational and project
support to the heritage sector, and about $1.2 million to the
professional arts sector, for a total of almost $2.5 million.
CEDP applications are considered based on the strength of the
business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector.
