A total of $9,950 in operational support has been provided to heritage organizations in the St. Barbe region through the province's Cultural Economic Development Program.

"We cannot overstate the amount of time and hard work that people in local communities put into preserving and promoting our heritage" said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Their dedication in safeguarding our past, and sharing it with others, is helping to keep our history alive for present and future generations."

Budget 2010 investments in the St. Barbe region are as follows:

  • Conservation and Heritage Committee - $2,830;

  • Trout River Heritage Committee - $2,300;

  • Norris Point Heritage Committee - $1,820;

  • Nurse Myra Bennett Foundation - $1,670;

  • Bonne Bay Cottage Hospital Heritage Corporation - $1,000; and,

  • Woody Point Heritage Committee - $330.

"The St. Barbe area offers some of the most picturesque landscape and rich history in our province, with many visitors passing through our communities each year," said St. Barbe MHA Wallace Young. "It is great to see these heritage organizations avail of this operational support, helping to enhance their abilities in promoting our unique culture."

The 2010 Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP) is providing $1.27 million for operational and project support to the heritage sector, and about $1.2 million to the professional arts sector, for a total of almost $2.5 million.

CEDP applications are considered based on the strength of the business plans, vision and potential for development within the sector. For more information on the CEDP program for heritage organizations, and application guidelines, visit: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/heritage/cedp/index.html.
