Celebrates 10 Years
Beginning today, film buffs of all ages will once again have the
opportunity to enjoy the ever-popular Nickel Independent Film Festival,
which this year is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and
Recreation, will attend this evening's opening, taking place at the LSPU
Hall, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
"Since 2001, the Nickel Independent Film Festival has provided a
means for local filmmakers to showcase their work to a variety of
audiences," said Minister French. "As a government, we are committed to
the continued promotion and growth of Newfoundland and Labrador's film
industry. I congratulate the festival organizers as they celebrate their
10th anniversary and wish them continued success for the next
10."
The Provincial Government has provided $14,000 in operational support
to the Nickel Independent Film Festival — a $4,000 increase over 2009
funding levels — through its Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).
"The funding we receive from the Provincial Government ensures that
the Nickel can continue to support our filmmakers by, first and
foremost, showing the films they create to audiences across the
province," said Ruth Lawrence, Executive Director of the Nickel
Independent Film Festival. "For our 10th anniversary, we have taken a
look back; we held a retrospective screening of 10 films from the last
10 years of the Nickel in May; at this year's festival we will have an
archival photo display, and we are currently working on compiling a
comprehensive list of all the film, new media, and television projects
created here since our inception. We also look to the future with the
development of a new website to improve our service to Nickel filmmakers
and audiences."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our
Future provides almost $2.5 million to support arts, cultural and
heritage initiatives throughout the province, with about $1.2 million
earmarked for the arts and culture sectors.
CEDP projects are selected based on the strength of the business
plans, vision, and potential development within the sector. For more
