The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has received
$14,000 through the Community Capital Grant Program to assist with
upgrades and an extension to the Churchill River Walking Trail.
"The Churchill River Trail will be repaired, widened,
and extended further into forested areas around the town with assistance
through the program," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of
Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "Walking trails are an important
recreational asset to any community, and we expect this investment will
enable residents and visitors to Happy Valley-Goose Bay to engage in
regular physical activity and further enjoy the natural beauty this
unique region of our province has to offer."
Happy Valley-Goose-Bay is among more than 30
communities throughout the province which will receive funding to
purchase equipment and upgrade its recreation and sport infrastructure
through the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community
Capital Grant Program.
"Labrador is renowned for its beautiful untouched
lands and spectacular vistas," said the Honourable John Hickey, MHA for
the District of Lake Melville. "The enhancement of the Churchill River
Walking Trail will help to ensure that areas such as this are fully
appreciated by making it easier for residents and visitors to enjoy this
natural beauty while obtaining the benefits of an active lifestyle."
The Community Capital Grant Program is an
application-based program that provides funding to assist municipalities
and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports
infrastructure.
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our
Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the
Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in
this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial
Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy
Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new
funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and
equipment.
