Minister to Attend Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador's AGM

Communities at Play—Make the Connection is the theme of Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador's 39th Annual General Meeting and Conference being held this weekend in Marystown.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will address the delegation this evening (Friday, June 11) at Hotel Marystown, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

"Increasing our population's participation in regular physical activity is one of the main objectives of the province's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister French. "For almost four decades, Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador has delivered recreational programming and services to both young and older alike, and I look forward to meeting with delegates this weekend and hearing their views on how we can continue to work together to improve our collective health and quality of life."

Minister French noted that Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides almost $540,000 in operational funding to Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador to support such programs as High Five, which promotes healthy development in children ages 6-12, Recreation Month activities, the Small Steps. . . Big Results physical activity campaign, professional development activities and a variety of recreational programming and services delivered throughout the province.

Operational support for provincial recreation and sport federations in 2010-11 — including Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador, Sport Newfoundland and Labrador and School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador — totals almost $1.8 million, an increase of about $360,000 since the introduction of the provincial recreation and sport strategy in 2007.

Since 2007, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has invested more than $70 million in new funding for recreation and sports infrastructure, athlete development, and recreational programming and services throughout the province.
