Appleton Receives $6,500 for Beach Volleyball Court Development

The Town of Appleton is receiving $6,500 through the Community Capital Grant Program to support the construction of a regulation-sized, outdoor beach volleyball court.

"The construction of this court will enable six local volleyball teams — four school teams and two adult teams — to broaden their participation in this sport in an outdoor environment," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "The court will also be available to the public and provide all residents with an opportunity to be engaged in a fast-paced, physically demanding sport."

Appleton is among more than 30 communities throughout the province which will receive funding to purchase equipment and upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"This funding will certainly be an asset to the Town of Appleton," said the Honourable Kevin O'Brien, MHA for Gander. "Physical activity is such an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and this investment will not only benefit the six local volleyball teams, but all residents in the community."

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides funding to assist municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports infrastructure.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment throughout the province.
