Congratulates School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador on 40th
Anniversary
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, will address the delegation of the 2010 School
Sports Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) Annual General Meeting and
Awards Banquet tomorrow (Friday, June 4) at 11:00 a.m. The meeting will
take place at the Comfort Inn, St. John's.
"School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador promotes the importance of
being active and healthy to our children and youth, while also
encouraging their involvement in sport and physical activity in school,"
said Minister French. "As this organization celebrates their 40th
anniversary this year, I commend them for their tireless efforts and
hard work they have provided to Newfoundland and Labrador over the past
four decades."
The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation provides SSNL more
than $500,000 annually including operational support and support for
Participation Nation, a school-based program designed to provide
physical activity opportunities to children and youth in a
non-competitive environment. The funding also includes support for the
Labrador Travel Subsidy, a program which allows schools in Labrador to
compete in regional and provincial sport competitions.
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future
provides over $1.2 million in new funding to improve existing
programming and introduce new initiatives which support the goals and
objectives of the provincial recreation and sport strategy, Active
Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. Since the launch of the strategy in
2007, more than $70 million in Provincial Government funding has been
committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and
athlete development.
