Musgravetown Provided $13,200 to Upgrade Walking Trail

A municipal park in Musgravetown will get an upgrade to its walking trail with the help of $13,200 from the Community Capital Grant Program.

"This investment will go towards the purchase of crushed stone, picnic tables, benches and areas of boardwalk to encourage more local residents to engage in outdoor physical activity on a regular basis," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "As a Provincial Government, we are pleased to support initiatives which improve a community's recreational infrastructure and promote healthy lifestyles among residents of all ages."

Musgravetown is among more than 30 communities throughout the province which will receive funding to purchase equipment and upgrade recreation and sport infrastructure through the most recent allocation of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.

"Physical activity is extremely important to the overall well-being of our residents and our government realizes this need, as is evident in this announcement today," said Sandy Collins, MHA for Terra Nova. "The residents of Musgravetown and surrounding communities have worked tirelessly on the development of this trail over the past several years. With the continued support of the Provincial Government, this project is well on its way to reaching its full potential."

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program which provides funding of up to $15,000 to assist municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their recreation and sports infrastructure.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment throughout the province.
