May 27, 2010Cultural Sector Gets Financial Boost
Newfoundland and Labrador's cultural sector is getting a $104,669
boost, with new project funding recently approved through the Cultural
Economic Development Program (CEDP).
"As a Provincial Government, we are committed to continued investment
in our cultural industries and to enabling Newfoundland and Labrador's
professional artists to create and promote their work," said the
Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation.
"These most recent investments provide support to a number of cultural
pursuits in the literary, theatre, music and visual arts sectors, and
will help in the further growth of this important aspect of our
economy."
In addition to CEDP funding previously announced for the cultural
sector, recent investments include:
The Newfoundland Quarterly - $20,000 to offset the
cost of producing four issues (April, June, September and
December) of the Newfoundland Quarterly in 2010.
Andy Jones - $15,000 to help with costs
associated with production of a national tour of the stage shows
The Queen of Paradise's Garden and An Evening with
Uncle Val.
Shallaway Choir - $10,000 to help with travel
expenses to Beijing, China, July 31-August 11, where artistic
directors Susan Knight and Kellie Walsh have been invited to
present workshops at the 29th International Society
for Music Education World Conference. Shallaway's ensemble
Camerata has also been invited to perform as the sole Canadian
choral representative at this international conference.
St. John's Storytelling Festival - $10,000 to help
host and organize the 18th annual conference of
Storytellers of Canada: International Perspectives on the Art
and Tradition of Storytelling. The 2010 conference and
annual general meeting is being held in St. John's from July
28-August 1.
The Atlantic Presenters Association - $6,000 to
offset costs associated with implementing a two-day professional
development workshop on audience development. The Atlantic
Presenters Association is the regional arts presenters'
organization for the four Atlantic Provinces. It is a leader in
the presentation of the performing arts and promotes the
development of performing arts touring in the Atlantic region.
The workshop was held at the St. John's Arts and Culture Centre
May 15-16.
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery - $5,000 to
offset costs associated with touring Shorelines, an
exhibition of artwork by three Newfoundland and Labrador
artists, to the Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray, Ireland and to the
Siamsa Tire in Tralee, Ireland, in the fall of 2010. The
exhibition is also on display at The Rooms Provincial Art
Gallery (Level 4), beginning today (Thursday, May 27) and
running through to September 26.
Audrey Feltham - $4,400 for the visual artist to
avail of a four-week mentorship in Huddersfield, England with
international fibre artist Dionne Swift, and to participate in
an international exhibition at Printfest, in Cumbria, England.
Soundbone Traditional Arts Foundation Inc. - $4,000
to offset costs associated with a marketing strategy, which will
include assistance for website development. The Soundbone
Traditional Arts Foundation is partnering with Lifelong Learning
at Memorial University to offer a music retreat for young adults
which will provide an opportunity to learn songs, improve
playing skills, learn folk dancing and songwriting, and gain
experience playing music with others. It will be held October
3-9 at Max Simms Memorial Camp in Bishop's Falls.
The Literary Arts Foundation - $2,669 to offset
costs associated with promotion of its second annual writers'
retreat, the only one of its kind held in this province, to be
held October 12-16 in Swift Current.
Shakespeare by the Sea - $2,600 to offset costs
associated with offering a voice workshop at the Reid Theatre,
Memorial University.
Budget 2010: The Right Investments ' For Our Children and Our
Future provides $2.8 million to support arts, cultural and heritage
initiatives throughout the province, with $1.5 million earmarked for the
arts and culture sectors. CEDP projects are selected based on the
strength of the business plans, vision, and potential development within
