In a combined effort designed to increase recreational
opportunities for youth on the Burin Peninsula, the three towns of
Lord's Cove, Lamaline and Point May have been provided $15,000 through
the Provincial Government's Community Capital Grant Program to purchase
sport and recreation equipment.
"This funding will be used to purchase a wide array of
outdoor sports and recreation equipment and to assist with upgrades to
community playgrounds," said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of
Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This investment will enable more area
children and youth to participate in outdoor physical and social
activities, and I commend these communities for coming together to
support the needs of their young people."
More than 30 communities throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador have received funding to purchase equipment and upgrade their
recreation and sport infrastructure through the most recent allocation
of $450,900 through the Community Capital Grant Program.
"I am pleased to have worked with these communities to
secure $5,000 for each recreation committee, for a total investment of
$15,000 into Lord's Cove, Lamaline and Point May," said the Honourable
Darin King, MHA for Grand Bank. "This funding will upgrade the community
playgrounds, providing our youth and children with safe facilities to be
active and enjoy healthy lifestyles."
The Community Capital Recreation Grant Program is an
application-based program that provides funding of up to $15,000 to
assist municipalities and recreation commissions to improve their
recreation and sports infrastructure.
Budget 2010: The Right Investments — For Our
Children and Our Future provides an additional $300,000 to the
Community Capital Grant Program, bringing the total annual investment in
this program to $1.3 million. Since the introduction of the Provincial
Government's recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy
Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $62.4 million in new
funding has been committed for recreation and sport infrastructure and
equipment throughout the province.
