Province Launches 2010 Resident Winter Tourism Campaign

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador have received, or will receive, a brochure in their mailboxes this week which provides details of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation's 2010 resident winter tourism campaign.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the resident winter tourism campaign, part of the overall For the Love of NL campaign, is designed to extend the traditional tourism season and increase winter business for tourism industry operators in the province.

"Promoting resident travel is an important part of the Provincial Government's tourism marketing efforts," said Minister French. "With this year's winter campaign, we want to remind everyone that there is a lot to see and do right here in Newfoundland and Labrador during the winter months. Whether you're looking for ski packages, snowmobiling adventures, a romantic getaway, a shopping excursion, or the opportunity to take in some entertainment, I encourage residents to get out and explore what this province has to offer."

The campaign combines radio and direct mail with participation from 30 tourism industry operators, offering various packages for winter getaways. Detailed information can be found in the brochures or by going to: www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/packages/

Since 2003, the Provincial Government has more than doubled its investment in tourism marketing, from $6 million to $13 million. In 2008, the total resident and non-resident tourism industry contributed about $850 million to the Newfoundland and Labrador economy, an increase of almost $60 million from the year before.
