Republic of Doyle Garners Positive Ratings and Reviews
Since last week's debut of the new CBC-Television series
Republic of Doyle, the film and television industry has
been abuzz with reports of record-breaking ratings and
positive reviews for the new show, filmed exclusively in
Newfoundland and Labrador.
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, today noted the shows debut
episode attracted almost one million viewers (969,000),
the highest ratings ever recorded for a new CBC
Television drama.
"I attended the Republic of Doyle premiere event at the
Majestic Theatre in St. John's last week, and the
excitement and enthusiasm for the show was very
evident," said Minister French. "I encourage all
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to tune into CBC-TV
again tonight to witness for themselves the incredible
talent, superior production values, and good
old-fashioned television storytelling that has made
Republic of Doyle an example of the kind of high-quality
show that will help cement Newfoundland and Labrador's
growing reputation as a desired location for film and
television production."
The show airs tonight at 9:30 p.m. on CBC (9:00 p.m. in
Labrador).
Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation provided
$1.5 million in film equity funding to Republic of
Doyle. The size of the production will also enable
producers to avail of up to $3 million through the
Newfoundland and Labrador Film and Video Tax Credit. The
value of economic spin-off resulting from the production
is estimated at about $11 million.
In the past six years, from 2004 to 2009, the Government
of Newfoundland and Labrador has invested more than $24
million to film production activity which, in turn, has
enabled approximately $67 million to be leveraged from
other public and private sources.
