Minor Hockey Week Activities Include
Celebration of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador–s 75th
Anniversary
The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, today recognized January 9-16,
2010 as Minor Hockey Week across Newfoundland and
Labrador.
"Minor Hockey Week is a highly-anticipated and popular
annual event in our province," said Minister French. "It
is a celebration of the sport of hockey, physical
activity, leadership and team building, and good
sportsmanship. I take this opportunity to commend the
many coaches, managers, officials, and parents who
volunteer their time to support minor hockey, and wish
the players and all involved in this week–s activities
all the best."
The theme of this year's Minor Hockey Week, which was
launched in Corner Brook on Saturday, January 9, is: The
Outcome of the Player is Still More Important Than the
Outcome of the Game.
"The theme is very fitting, and is particularly
appropriate as Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador
celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2010," said Minister
French. "I congratulate the association for the
incredible job they have done in developing the sport of
hockey, and the individuals involved, over the years.
Their work supports the goals of the province's
recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy
Newfoundland and Labrador, in many ways, particularly in
that it encourages young people to become more
physically active through involvement in organized
sport."
Gerry Evans, President of Hockey Newfoundland and
Labrador, said the association is very proud of its
75-year history.
"Our association continues to prosper, and our young
hockey players continue to have the opportunity to play
and develop their skills," Mr. Evans. "That is a true
testament to the commitment of so many dedicated
volunteers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."
Since 1935, Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador has been
the face of amateur hockey in the province. Made up of
over 11,000 registered players, coaches, managers and
officials, the association promotes, supervises and
regulates competition in all recognized categories.
Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation, provided
Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador with $35,000 to support
its programs throughout the province.
