The timeframe for the assessment of the offshore oil
spill prevention and response in place off Newfoundland and Labrador
being undertaken by Captain Mark Turner has been extended.
"Extra time is required for this assessment of our
offshore oil and gas industry given the many issues involved and the
large number of documents that need review," said the Honourable Kathy
Dunderdale, Minister of Natural Resources. "Our government wants to
ensure that Captain Turner has the appropriate amount of time to
complete this work."
Captain Turner, an expert in marine safety and
environmental management, commenced a review of oil spill prevention and
response in May 2010 with an initial timeframe of 90 days to complete
the scope of work. Upon request of Captain Turner, an extension to the
initial timeframe to present a final report to the Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador has been provided.
"While we have confidence in the current level of
environmental protection in this industry, the work of Captain Turner
includes a review of regimes in other jurisdictions," said Minister
Dunderdale. "Safety and environmental protection are paramount for us
and this review will provide guidance for possible future improvements."
The Provincial Government announced the Terms of
Reference for this assessment and the appointment of Captain Turner on
May 12, 2010. For more information, please visit
