Equipment Funding Supports Isles of Notre Dame Volunteers

The Summerford Volunteer Fire Department will benefit from $9,945 in Provincial Government funding to help purchase new firefighting equipment. The Honourable Kevin OBrien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services, today announced the funding, which will help in purchasing a new portable pump, boots, helmets and bunker suit jackets and pants.

"Firefighters make a significant contribution to communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, through their dedication and continued commitment," said Minister OBrien. "Through the high quality training offered by the Provincial Government and through the experience garnered on the ground, our government is certainly pleased to provide funding of this kind to ensure the safety of the women and men of the fire service."

The funding, which is focused on providing personal protective equipment for firefighters, is administered by Fire and Emergency Services Newfoundland and Labrador.

"The Summerford Fire Department provides a great sense of comfort for the residents of New World Island," said Derrick Dalley, MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame. "Our firefighters provide essential services in our communities that save lives and property, for which we are all grateful. Our government continues to support our firefighters and provide funding to ensure they have the best equipment to do their jobs safely and effectively."

Budget 2010: The Right Investments For Our Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures on firefighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for the fire department in Summerford will be shared between the Provincial Government and the community under the 90/10 cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a total project cost of more than $11,500.
