Equipment Funding Supports Isles of Notre
Dame Volunteers
The Summerford Volunteer Fire Department will benefit from
$9,945 in Provincial Government funding to help purchase new
firefighting equipment. The Honourable Kevin O�Brien, Minister
of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and
Emergency Services, today announced the funding, which will help
in purchasing a new portable pump, boots, helmets and bunker
suit jackets and pants.
"Firefighters make a significant contribution to communities
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, through their dedication
and continued commitment," said
Minister O�Brien. "Through the high quality training offered by
the Provincial Government and through the experience garnered on
the ground, our government is certainly pleased to provide
funding of this kind to ensure the safety of the women and men
of the fire service."
The funding, which is focused on providing personal
protective equipment for firefighters, is administered by Fire
and Emergency Services � Newfoundland and Labrador.
"The Summerford Fire Department provides a great sense of
comfort for the residents of New World Island," said Derrick
Dalley, MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame. "Our firefighters
provide essential services in our communities that save lives
and property, for which we are all grateful. Our government
continues to support our firefighters and provide funding to
ensure they have the best equipment to do their jobs safely and
effectively."
Budget 2010: The Right Investments � For Our Children and
Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting equipment
from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing expenditures
on firefighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million. Funding for
the fire department in Summerford will be shared between the
Provincial Government and the community under the 90/10
cost-shared ratio established through the Municipal Capital
Works Program, for a total project cost of more than $11,500.
