Placentia-St. Mary�s Fire
Departments Receive Over $42,000 in Funding
A Provincial Government investment of $42,155 will
assist three fire departments in Placentia-St. Mary�s acquire new fire
fighting equipment. The Honourable Kevin O�Brien, Minister of Municipal
Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services,
announced funding today for Branch, Mount Carmel-Mitchell�s Brook-St.
Catherines, and Whitbourne Fire Departments.
"The uncertainty of what dangers which may lurk around
any corner in an emergency situation is just one of the many reasons why
enhanced fire fighter protection is a priority for our government," said
Minister O�Brien. "Their members are a spirited and dedicated group that
exemplifies all that is good about Newfoundland and Labrador. I am both
pleased and proud to provide funding to support their continued
protection."
The funding, which will provide for such items as suction hose and
strainers, bunker suits, helmets and air cylinders, is administered by
Fire and Emergency Services � Newfoundland and Labrador.
"This funding will assist the fire departments of
Whitbourne, Mount Carmel-Mitchell�s Brook-St. Catherines, and Branch,"
said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister of Justice and MHA for
Placentia-St. Mary�s. "It will provide much needed equipment to enable
these brigades to carry out their valuable work on behalf of the
communities they serve."
Budget 2010: The Right Investments � For Our
Children and Our Future doubled the investment in fire fighting
equipment from $500,000 to $1 million, while also increasing
expenditures on fire fighting vehicles to a total of $2.5 million.
Funding for Placentia-St. Mary�s will be shared between the Provincial
Government and the respective communities under the 90/10 cost shared
ratio established through the Municipal Capital Works Program, for a
project total of over $49,000.
