November 12, 2010Request for Proposals Issued for
911/E-911 Feasibility Study
Fire and Emergency Services — Newfoundland and Labrador is moving
forward with a Request for Proposals (RFP) to examine the feasibility of
expanding access to the province's basic 911 system and the piloting of
an Enhanced 911 system (E-911). E-911 is an automatic emergency response
system which provides detailed information to operators and emergency
responders.
"Our government is committed to exploring the possible options for
the development of expanded 911 and E-911 opportunities in Newfoundland
and Labrador," said the Honourable Kevin O'Brien,
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and
Emergency Services,
"There are many complexities associated with
moving forward with establishing expanded access, such as a lack of
civic addressing, the large geographical expanse of the province and the
differing levels of emergency response depending on proximity to police,
ambulance and fire departments. However, the issue warrants an
appropriate plan and a proper costing so that both government and
residents understand the actions needed to advance this initiative."
As part of the RFP, FES- NL is seeking information on where best to
expand basic 911 service and the identification of opportunities to
provide E-911 services, where circumstances make it possible. The Terms
of Reference are available through the Government Purchasing Agency.
"It's been demonstrated in other jurisdictions that this will not be
a quick process and it requires appropriate attention by qualified and
knowledgeable individuals," noted Minister O'Brien. "While this process
may take some time, we are looking forward to taking the next steps in
exploring the expansion of emergency response services in Newfoundland
and Labrador."
