Tentative Agreement Reached with Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Association

Today, the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, announced a tentative agreement has been reached with the Newfoundland and Labrador Dental Association (NLDA) for the Childrens Dental Health Program.

Our government is pleased that our negotiations have been successful and that this tentative agreement has been reached with the NLDA, said Minister Marshall. This is good news for families with children as the agreement covers the continuation of the program which provides childrens dental services.

The tentative agreement provides for an increase of approximately 20 per cent to the compensation that dentists receive for services to children over the next four-year period through the Childrens Dental Health Program.

Our government is committed to ensuring that our provinces children have access to quality dental services and our Childrens Dental Health Program reflects this commitment, said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, Minister of Health and Community Services. This tentative agreement ensures that children in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador will continue to receive excellent dental care under our program.

Budget 2010: The Right Investments For Our Children and Our Future includes $7.6 million for the Childrens Dental Health Program. This program provides universal access for eligible dental services for children age 12 years and under, as well as for children age 13 to 17 years whose families are in receipt of income support benefits. Coverage is automatic for these children.

Coverage also includes 13- to 17-year-olds living in families with low incomes. Families with an annual net income of $30,000 or less, but who are not in receipt of income support, qualify under this category. These families must first apply for coverage through the Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program.
