2010 Pre-Budget Consultations Set to Begin

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, will begin public consultations on January 15, 2010, to gather input on priorities for Budget 2010.

"These sessions provide an excellent opportunity for the public to directly inform government as we prepare to deliver Budget 2010," said Minister Marshall. "Through these meetings, we hear about local issues and what the residents of the province would like to see for the future of our province. It is also an opportunity for our government to identify the challenges and opportunities we face as we continue to emerge from the financial uncertainty experienced globally."

This year consultations will be held in Corner Brook, Stephenville, St. John's, Labrador City/Wabush, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, St. Anthony, Marystown, Clarenville, Carbonear, Bonavista, Grand Falls-Windsor, Gander, and Springdale.

"The world has experienced the greatest economic downturn since the Depression," said Minister Marshall. "Thankfully, as a result of the strong fiscal management practices put in place by the Williams Government and the growth in our economy, our province has fared better than most other jurisdictions. While we have much to be proud of, we must maintain our fiscal management approach and plan for long-term sustainability of programs and services. I look forward to hearing from each group and individual as we work together to plan the future of our province."

Those who would like to participate in one of the scheduled consultation meetings are requested to register 48 hours prior to the scheduled meeting by phoning 709-729-2944 or by e-mailing budget@gov.nl.ca.
