Provincial Government Starts at the Top with Building Repairs

The Williams Government continues its aggressive plan to stimulate the economy by issuing tenders for roof replacement at five Provincial Government buildings.

"This government is taking a proactive approach to maintaining our public buildings," said the Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of Transportation and Works. "These alteration projects will ensure the long-term viability of these important structures."

The Department of Transportation and Works has issued tenders to replace roofs at the College of the North Atlantic campuses in Grand Falls-Windsor, Baie Verte and Clarenville, as well as the Gander Arts and Culture Centre and the highway depot in Grand Falls-Windsor.

"The Williams Government recognizes it is prudent to invest strategically in these challenging economic times," said Minister Taylor. "Thats why we are investing approximately $800 million in infrastructure this fiscal year, doubling last years expenditure."

The Provincial Government will invest $130 million to address repairs and maintenance to public buildings in 2009-10 an increase of $30 million from last fiscal year. In total, government will invest in excess of $4 billion in infrastructure projects over the next several years.
