Tendered Under 2009-10 Roads Improvement Program
The 2009-10 Provincial Roads Program has been
officially launched with the tendering of projects in four areas of the
province.
The Honourable Trevor Taylor, Minister of
Transportation and Works, announced that the districts of Bay of
Islands, St. George�s-Stephenville East, the Isles of Notre Dame and
Bonavista North will be the first to have projects tendered under the
$70.7 million Provincial Roads Improvement Program.
"The Williams Government is spending $800 million in
infrastructure this year as part of our economic stimulus plan and the
Provincial Roads Improvement Program is a big part of this strategy,"
said Minister Taylor. "We want to get tenders such as these issued as
soon as possible so we can get the projects moving."
The following are the first projects tendered:
In the Bay of Islands, the Gilliams River Bridge
will be rehabilitated;
In St. Georges - Stephenville East, a culvert
(0.7 kilometres west of Barachois Brook Bridge) will be replaced;
In the Isles of Notre Dame, 5.2 kilometres of
Fogo Island Road and three kilometres of Route 334, Joe Batt's Arm
Road will be pulverized, upgraded and paved and 0.5 kilometres of
Route 334 on Fogo Island will be reshaped and paved; and,
In Bonavista North, 4.6 km of Gander Bay Road
from Island Pond Brook towards Gander Bay and three kilometres of
Route 320 from Trinity towards Indian Bay will be pulverized and
paved.
The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create
an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the
Provincial Government�s infrastructure strategy, valued at more than $4
billion over the next several years. As part of Budget 2009, the
Williams Government will invest over $300 million in transportation
infrastructure.
