Province Invests an
Additional $63,000 in Cultural Projects
The Government of
Newfoundland and Labrador has recently invested an
additional $63,000 in individual cultural sector
projects, under the province�s Cultural Economic
Development Program (CEDP).
�CEDP investment is designed to provide greater
opportunities to stimulate economic activity within the
province�s cultural and heritage industries,� said the
Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture
and Recreation. �Through this program, emerging and
established individuals and organizations are provided
support to refine their professional skills, showcase
their work, and increase their exposure locally,
nationally and internationally.�
In additional to funding announced earlier this year,
recent investments in cultural sector projects through
the CEDP include:
- Riddle Fence Inc. �
$10,000 to assist in the publication of three
upcoming issues of the arts and culture journal,
Riddle Fence.
- Battery Radio �
$9,000 to offset costs associated with the
presentation of audio screenings at three major
European media festivals in 2009: the International
Feature Conference in Dublin; the Prix Marulic in
Hvar, Croatia, and the Prix Europa in Berlin.
- March Hare Festival
� $8,000 to offset costs associated with the 24th
annual literary/musical festival, with a total of 10
shows to be held March 5-14, 2010 in Corner Brook,
St. John�s, Gander and Toronto.
- Christina Parker
Gallery � $7,000 to support attendance at the
Toronto International Art Fair (TIAF) this past
October, where works by Newfoundland and Labrador
artists were presented.
- Brick Books � $5,000
to offset costs associated with sending poet Randall
Maggs on a Canada-United States reading tour to
promote his poetry collection Night Work: The
Sawchuk Poems. Readings will be held in Vermont, New
York State, Boston, Maine, Halifax, Montreal,
Yellowknife and Whitehorse.
- Marnie Parsons �
$4,400 to offset costs associated with design and
construction of a booth for display and sale of
Running the Goat - Books & Broadsides� products at
craft and printers� fairs.
- Jim Maunder (Visual
Artist) � $4,050 to offset costs associated with
development of a social media marketing plan,
including creation of an interactive website.
- DRC Publishing �
$3,477 to offset costs associated with production of
a comprehensive catalogue featuring DRC titles.
- Jack Eastwood �
$3,462 to offset costs associated with his
attendance at the Wired Writing Studio in Banff,
Alberta, for a two-week intensive studio to work
with a mentor on his novel-in-progress, The Red Car.
- North Atlantic Forum
� $3,225 to offset costs associated with attendance
of a steering committee member at the 2009 Bornholm
Conference in Denmark, held September 23-25. The
purpose was to present plans for the 2011
conference, which will be held in St. John's.
- Tina Dolter (Visual
Artist) � $2,822 to offset costs associated with her
participation in the curated exhibition, The Last
Taboo, which took place recently at the ZoomerShow
2009 trade show in Toronto.
- City of St. John�s �
$2,500 to engage the services of Reid Henry of Local
Projects Inc., to present a workshop on developing
and managing cultural facilities.
The CEDP is a $2.8
million program which supports arts, cultural and
heritage initiatives throughout the province. CEDP
projects are selected based on the strength of the
business plans, vision and potential for development
within the sector. For more information on the CEDP

The Provincial
Government�s cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland
and Labrador (2006), has seen more than $25 million in
new funding invested in the cultural and heritage
sectors over the past four years.
