Province Invests Over $620,000 in
Paradise Wellness Centre
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has
committed $620,905 to upgrade and expand the Paradise
Wellness Centre.
On behalf of the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister
of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, the Honourable
Dianne Whalen, MHA for Conception Bay East and Bell
Island, made the announcement yesterday evening
(Tuesday, September 15).
"The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is
committed to improving the lives of our residents
through increased participation in physical activity,"
said Minister Whalen. "With this investment, the Town of
Paradise is one step closer to fulfilling its goal of
becoming a community that offers a balanced lifestyle to
its young, growing families, and allows residents of all
ages and those in surrounding communities to engage
in programming as well."
The funding will be used to develop the second floor
of the centre. Improvements include construction of a
large multipurpose room; a wellness room and
kitchenette; additions to the sprinkler and elevator
systems, and mechanical, electrical and window upgrades.
The second floor will be used for a variety of programs,
such as nutrition classes, parent and tot classes,
running clubs, photography sessions, and more.
Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North, welcomed the
news.
"This investment in recreation facilities is great
news for the town's residents, including the many young
families that I represent in Elizabeth Park," Mr. Kent
said. "As one of the fastest growing communities in
eastern Canada, the Town of Paradise has a growing need
for recreation infrastructure, and I'm pleased that we
are able to help make things happen."
"I am very pleased to see that the Town of Paradise
will continue to expand and make improvements to the
recreation facilities for the youth of Paradise," said
Beth Marshall, MHA for Topsail. "The addition of the
second floor to the youth centre will allow for more
programs to be offered and ensure better utilization of
this wonderful facility. Again, it shows the commitment
this government has made to promote the fitness and
well-being of our youth and guide them on a path of
active and healthy lifestyles."
Paradise Mayor Ralph Wiseman said this investment,
along with $507,967 from the Town of Paradise, will
enhance the recreation and physical activity programming
the town now offers.
"The support the Provincial Government has provided
this project has been greatly appreciated," said Mayor
Wiseman. "The health and well-being of our residents is
very important, and with the expansion of our wellness
centre we can provide more opportunities for everyone to
get involved and become more physically active."
The town will be starting the project tender process
in the coming weeks, with construction expected to start
later this fall.
