As the 2009 Canada Summer Games
officially came to a close in Prince Edward Island this
past weekend, Team Newfoundland and Labrador (Team NL)
had many reasons to celebrate, including six medal wins.
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister
of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today congratulated
Team NL members on their performance at the games, and
thanked the Canada Games mission staff, as well as
volunteer coaches and managers, for their commitment to
the athletes.
"I am very proud of Team Newfoundland
and Labrador and what they accomplished at these games,"
said Minister Jackman. "The dedication, endurance and
self-sacrifice this team has shown over the past two
weeks have been incredible. Not only did they make it to
the podium, many individuals and teams placed higher
than their rankings going into the event. Just as
significantly, team members forged new friendships and
made great memories that they will treasure forever."
Team Newfoundland and Labrador took
home a total of six medals - four silver and two bronze.
Erica Noonan, who was Team NLs flagbearer for the
closing ceremonies, won three silver medals in womens
SWAD (swimmer with a disability), in the 100-metre
breaststroke, 100-metre butterfly and 200-metre
individual medley. Ryan Brockerville won a silver medal
in the 3,000-metre steeplechase, while the womens four
rowing team (Alison DeLong, Jane Brodie, Stephanie Davis
and Alyssa Devereaux) and the mens rugby team each took
home a bronze medal.
At each Canada Games, the province or
territory with the highest number of points from all the
events is declared the champion and presented with the
Canada Games Flag. With a total of 95 points, Team
Newfoundland placed ninth overall, ahead of Team Prince
Edward Island, Team Yukon, Team Northwest Territories
and Team Nunavut. Ontario was named 2009 Canada Games
champions with a total of 274 points.
