Over $95,000 Invested in Provincial Sports Organizations

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that through the departments Capital Grant Program, $95,600 has been invested in 10 provincial sports organizations (PSOs) throughout the province to assist with the purchase of new sports equipment.

"As a government, we remain committed to our provinces young athletes on the path of achieving athletic excellence," said Minister Jackman. "This funding will help our sports organizations with necessary equipment purchases which in turn support athletes throughout Newfoundland and Labrador in their athletic endeavors."

Through the Capital Grant Program, grants up to $10,000 are provided to assist local PSOs with the purchase of athletic equipment such as wrestling mats, rowing shells, scoreboards and more. Applications are approved based on the following criteria: individual participation, safety concerns, support of regulation concepts and adjustment of rules and standards.

"This investment complements our governments ongoing focus to encourage the optimal health and wellbeing of the residents of Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Jackman. "Our continued commitment to healthy living and physical fitness is having an impact not only on our athletes, but also on our residents and communities throughout the province with such initiatives as the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework and the Provincial Wellness Plan."

A complete list of approved grants is listed in the backgrounder below.

Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation provided an additional $875,000 for recreation and sport initiatives designed to achieve the goals outlined in the provinces recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007). In the past three years alone, more than $8 million in new funding has been invested in the recreation and sports sectors.
