Stories and Songs of Placentia Area to
be Highlighted
The Placentia Area Historical Society has received
$19,000 through the 2009 Cultural Economic Development
Program (CEDP) to develop an interpretive plan for a
dynamic exhibit which will preserve and present the
distinctive songs and stories of the Placentia area.
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism,
Culture and Recreation, said the Historical Society is
working in partnership with the Town of Placentia and
a number of professional musicians, poets and
storytellers to develop the plan, which will be the
first step in creating an exhibit that will offer a new
perspective on the regions musical traditions.
"The history and memory of a people are reflected in
their songs," said Minister Jackman. "Placentia Bay has
a rich and colourful history, filled with singers and
storytellers who for centuries have passed their love of
music and storytelling to future generations. The
exhibit will present this tradition to the public, and
honour those who dedicated their lives to preserve it."
The exhibit will also feature broad social themes,
such as memories of resettlement, and be designed to
travel, with artifacts, photographs and a rich array of
recordings.
"This is a great project, which is designed to
preserve the rich culture and heritage of Placentia Bay,
and I commend the Historical Society for bringing it
forward," said Felix Collins, MHA for the District of
Placentia-St. Marys Bay. "The Placentia area is making
great strides in the development of arts and culture
initiatives, and I am pleased that as a government, we
have been providing such strong support."
The 2009 CEDP program is providing a total of $2.8
million to the arts, cultural and heritage sectors, with
$1.3 million earmarked for operational and project
support to the heritage sector, and about $1.5 million
for the professional arts sector.
CEDP projects are selected on the basis of economic
impact, professional involvement, project objectives,
partnerships and interpretive content. For more
