Minister Wishes Athletes Well at Canada
Summer Games
The anticipation is mounting for Team
Newfoundland and Labrador a contingent of 369
athletes, volunteer coaches and managers, and mission
staff who are just one day away from participating in
the 2009 Canada Summer Games being held August 15-29 in
Prince Edward Island.
The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister
of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, who will attend the
opening ceremonies tomorrow (Saturday, August 15), today
wished the athletes well as they get set to take part in
one of the countrys most prestigious athletic sporting
events.
"The time has come when all your hard
work and dedication will be put to the test," said
Minister Jackman. "While its important to give 100 per
cent on the competition floor, its also important to
have fun and enjoy yourselves. The games will come and
go, but the memories will last a lifetime."
The minister also acknowledged the
tremendous efforts of Team Newfoundland and Labradors
coaches.
"I thank the many volunteer coaches
and managers who have given so freely of their time over
the past two years, working with and training these
athletes," said Minister Jackman. "Your support and
dedication will be remembered by the athletes not only
during the games, but for many years to come."
Team Newfoundland and Labrador is
composed of 22 teams representing 17 sports: athletics,
baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, cycling, diving,
golf, rowing, rugby, sailing, soccer, softball,
swimming, tennis, triathlon, volleyball, and wrestling.
In addition to the athletes,
provincial artists Kyle Bustin (visual artist), Jane
Walker (visual artist), and Anna Wheeler
(musician/actor) will be participating in the games
through the National Artists Program. This program
brings artists from across Canada for an intensive
two-week mentorship in a wide variety of disciplines,
including theatre, music, dance, visual and literary
arts.
