Treasure Troves Ready for Discovery During Museum Week
Museum Week runs June 22-28 in Newfoundland and Labrador, and the
Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation,
is encouraging residents to visit their local museums to discover more
about the provinces history.
"We often hear the words
unique and rich used to describe
our provinces heritage," said Minister Jackman. "These descriptions are
true, but as residents, we often take for granted the remarkable,
treasure trove of history that exists in our own back yards. This week,
and throughout the year, I encourage residents to embark on their own
historical journey and find out more about the fascinating stories of
this province."
The Museum Association of Newfoundland and Labrador (MANL) is
celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The association
will be hosting a weekend event at The Village Shopping Centre, St.
Johns, on Saturday, June 27, 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m. and on Sunday,
June 28, 12:00 noon - 5:00 p.m. Local museums will set up displays in
the centre court and provide information to the general public.
"Community museums are actively preserving the tangible stories of
people and nature in all parts of Newfoundland and Labrador, said Peter
Latta, President of MANL. Visiting any museum will remind us there are
no ordinary stories. Museums collect both the unique and the everyday
type of artifact. When seen together, these things help us understand
the lives of people and communities.
This year, through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP),
MANL has received $100,000 to support general operations and special
services for its members, including travel bursaries and workshops. In
addition, $9,343 has been provided to support a conservation assessment
project, one that will provide essential information to museums about
preventing damage and deterioration of artifacts, and how to implement
appropriate preventative conservation measures. This funding is in
addition to the over $820,000 in operational funding announced last
month for 115 heritage organizations, approved under the CEDP program.
MANL is committed to supporting the excellent presentation and
preservation of the culture and heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Since the release of the provinces cultural strategy,
Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and
Investment in Culture (2006), the Provincial Government has invested
more than $25 million in new funding into the cultural and
heritage sectors.
