Get Up and Move Just for the Fun of It!

June is Recreation Month in Newfoundland and Labrador and its time to get up and moving.

"The Provincial Government, in partnership with our provincial recreation and sport organizations, is committed to promoting active, healthy lifestyles for all residents," said the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "I encourage everyone young and old to make the extra effort to be active, not only this month, but every day."

Just For the Fun of It! is the new theme of Recreation Month, and Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador (RNL) officials are encouraging people to participate in various recreational and physical activities, just for the pure enjoyment of it.

"This is an important campaign, as it provides a great opportunity to draw attention to the benefits of recreation to individuals, families, neighborhoods, and communities," said RNL President Wanda Wight.

Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation provides $875,000 in new funding to improve existing programming and introduce new initiatives which support the goals and objectives of the provinces recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador. This funding includes $525,000 for recreation initiatives, $200,000 of which is additional funding for community recreation programming; $200,000 for a new Seniors Community Recreation Program; $75,000 for initiatives to promote physical activity among under-represented groups; and $50,000 in further support to the Regional Recreation Directors Program, operated through RNL.

These initiatives build on the first two years of investment in the recreation and sport strategy, which has so far seen more than $8 million in new funding invested in the sector over the past three years.
