Newfoundland and Labrador:
Provincial Table Tennis and Cross Country Skiing this
Weekend
School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador has two
provincial tournaments on tap this weekend. The provincial high school
table tennis tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Bishop
White All Grade is Port Rexton. The high school cross country skiers
will head to Stephenville High to determine the province�s best.
Five teams will be competing for the team championships in table tennis.
Joining the host, Bishop White All Grade will be New World Island
Academy (Summerford), Indian River High (Springdale), Roncalli High
(Port Saunders) and Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay).
Teams will compete in a round robin encounter system with the team
scoring three out of five matches winning the encounter. Each encounter
will consist of boys singles, girls singles, boys double, girls doubles
and mixed doubles. The team competition takes place Friday. On Saturday,
individual champions will be declared in all five divisions. Individuals
who have qualified for the provincial tournament include entries from
Lewisporte High, Dorset Collegiate (Pilley�s Island) and St Anne�s
School (Conne River).
Stephenville High will host the Provincial High School Cross Country
Skiing championships. Individual and team honors are also up for grabs
at this event. Team races will be held in the Junior Girls (2.5 km),
Junior Boys (5 km), Senior Girls (5 km) and Senior Boys (7.5 km)
divisions. The race style will be freestyle for the individual races.
Relay race will be in the classic style of racing and will be a distance
of 1 km for the Senior Girls, Senior Boys and Junior Boys and .5 km for
Junior Girls. Teams from Canon Richards High (Flowers Cove), Harriot
Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Mountain Field Academy (Forteau),
Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) will join the host team in
competition. In addition to team qualifiers, individual entries will
compete from St. Thomas Aquinas School (Port au Port East), Stephenville
Middle School and Mountain Field Academy (Forteau).
The top teams will be awarded with gold and silver medals, while the top
team in each division will receive a championship banner. Individual
winners will be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals.
R.B.C. has joined as a major partner of School Sports Newfoundland and
Labrador.
