Resident Campaign Promotes Winter Tourism Activities

Residents of Newfoundland and Labrador have received, or will receive this week, a brochure in their mailboxes which provides details of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreations 2009 resident winter tourism campaign.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, said the campaign promotes winter recreational activities, including snowmobiling and skiing, and also provides information on several winter holiday options available.

"There are many opportunities for fun and relaxation during the winter months in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Jackman. "This campaign encourages residents to embrace the winter season, enjoy outdoor activities, participate in cultural events, and take advantage of in-province weekend getaways and holiday packages."

The campaign combines radio and direct mail with advertisements from 26 participating tourism industry operators, and is one component of the Provincial Governments efforts to extend the traditional tourism season, support industry operators, and increase winter tourism business.

The Provincial Government has doubled its tourism marketing budget in the past five years, from $6 million to $12 million. Latest statistics indicate that resident travel accounts for 55 per cent of total tourism expenditures in Newfoundland and Labrador. The total resident and non-resident tourism industry contributes about $800 million to the provincial economy each year.

Winter tourism packages are also available online at the Newfoundland and Labrador tourism website at www.newfoundlandlabrador.com/Winter
