Harbour Grace in the Running for Hockeyville 2009

The Town of Harbour Grace has been selected as one of 10 finalists in Kraft Hockeyville 2009, and the Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today encouraged all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to vote online to help bring the event to this province.

"The Hockeyville competition searches for the Canadian community that best embodies the spirit of hockey and hometown pride and that spirit was abundantly evident this past July 1, Canada Day, when Harbour Grace native Danny Cleary brought the Stanley Cup home to that community," Minister Jackman said. "After witnessing the incredible energy and enthusiasm displayed by the people of Harbour Grace on that day, I know there could be no better choice for Hockeyville honours this year."

The website features a short video of each nominated community which displays their spirit and passion for the sport of hockey. The deadline for voting is January 18 at 11:59 p.m. People can vote as often as they wish.

"There's no doubt in my mind that Harbour Grace is Hockeyville from CeeBees greats like Dick Power, Jim and Carl Penney, George and Alex Faulkner and others, to the current Herder champs and, of course, Stanley Cup champion Danny Cleary," said the Honourable Jerome Kennedy, MHA for the District of Carbonear - Harbour Grace. "Harbour Grace is the home of champions and, with the support of the entire province, will win Kraft Hockeyville 2009."

Harbour Grace Mayor Don Coombs said his community is ready, willing, and able to host Hockeyville 2009.

"We are honoured to be a finalist for Hockeyville 2009," said Harbour Grace Mayor Don Coombs. "The history of hockey in this area is unmatched anywhere in this country. To all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador and all our friends and relations across this great country, I encourage you all to vote Harbour Grace Hockeyville 2009."

The final winning community will have an NHL pre-season game hosted in the community arena, a CBC Hockey Night in Canada broadcast from the community, and $100,000 to be used for upgrading their home arena, which in Harbour Grace, is the S. W Moores Memorial Stadium.

Kraft Hockeyville 2009 is sponsored by Kraft Canada, together with the CBC, the National Hockey League and the NHL Players Association.
