Hydromet Facility Achieves First Milestone
The hydromet commercial processing facility at Long
Harbour has achieved a significant milestone towards completion with
confirmation from Vale Inco that site preparation work has now begun.
"We are now seeing the required preparation work
getting underway with the awarding of the first contracts to ready the
site for construction," said the Honourable Kathy Dunderdale, Minister
of Natural Resources. "We look forward to the awarding of additional
contracts and the continued employment opportunities the project will
create for Long Harbour and its surrounding areas."
Newfound Construction Limited is providing site
demolition services, including the demolition and removal of existing
concrete foundations, steel structures, piping and electrical at the
site. Pennecon Heavy Civil Limited will carry out the site clearing.
More information can be found on the companys website -

Vale Inco has also submitted its implementation plan
for the construction of the facility by the March 31, 2009, deadline.
The plan provides direction for the start and completion of the project.
The Provincial Government is currently reviewing the document.
The implementation plan was a requirement of the
original 2002 Development Agreement and the subsequent new amended
agreement in January to reflect a later completion date. The amended
agreement enhances local employment benefits, provides greater certainty
that the project will proceed in a timely manner and increases
protection of the provinces resources.
The hydromet facility will be completed by February
28, 2013.
