Provincial Government Supports Enhanced
Fire Protection in Labrador
The Wabush Fire Department will
receive a new pumper truck through the Municipal Capital
Works Program with a provincial investment of over
$232,000.
"The Provincial Government is pleased
to partner with the Town of Wabush to purchase a new
fire truck," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister
of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire
and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and Labrador
(Acting). "Todays announcement is evidence of our
governments commitment to enhance the provinces fire
protection services through strategic investment in
equipment. This new truck will improve fire protection
for residents of the Town of Wabush."
"This funding announcement is great
news for the residents of Wabush," said Jim Baker, MHA
for the District of Labrador West. "The Town of Wabush
has seen significant growth over the past couple of
years and the addition of a new pumper truck will
greatly enhance the response and effectiveness of the
volunteer fire department to deal with emergency
situations. This investment is, once again, an example
of the Williams Government strong commitment to the
needs of Labrador West."
The new Wabush fire truck will be
cost-shared at a 90/10 ratio between the province and
the Town of Wabush. The Provincial Government will
contribute $232,248, and the town will add $25,805 to
the project. Including the utilization of a GST rebate
of $11,947, the total cost of the truck is approximately
$270,000. Wabush Mines has kindly joined with the Town
of Wabush to cover the 10 per cent cost normally paid by
the municipality.
