New
Fire Truck for Bay St. George South
Local service district
representatives and volunteer firefighters gathered in
the community of McKays today for the announcement of a
Provincial Government investment of over $200,000 to
purchase a new fire truck for the Bay St. George South
region.
The Honourable Tom
Hedderson, Acting Minister of Municipal Affairs and
Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency
Services-Newfoundland and Labrador, was joined by the
Honourable Joan Burke, MHA for the District of St.
George's-Stephenville East, and Local Service District
Chairperson Elvis Gillam to make the announcement.
Our government is
pleased to partner with the Local Service District of
Bay St. George South to provide enhanced fire protection
through the purchase of a new state of the art fire
truck, said Minister Hedderson. The equipment being
purchased through this partnership is necessary to
maintain an adequate level of fire protection within
these communities.
The new truck will be
cost-shared at a 90/10 ratio. The Provincial Government
will contribute $206,443 to this project, while the
Local Service District of Bay St. George South will add
$22,938 and will utilize a GST rebate of $10,619, to
make up the total cost.
I am pleased to join the
Local Service District of Bay St. George South today in
welcoming funding provided by the Provincial Government
to purchase a new desperately needed fire truck for this
area, said Minister Burke. Through working together,
the Local Service District can now offer residents peace
of mind that they have full fire protection services.
"This new truck is a
great addition to the fire protection services in this
region" said Elvis Gillam, Chairperson of the Bay St.
George South Local Service District. "I am very
appreciative of the support from the Provincial
Government and its staff in making this a reality. The
residents of Bay St. George South should also be
commended on showing their support through fundraising
efforts. This collaborative effort will enable our
communities to provide the essential fire protection
services our residents require."
"I am pleased to see that
our governments enhanced cost sharing arrangements,
announced in April of 2008, continue to make it easier
for communities to raise their share of funding for
important projects like this," said Minister Hedderson.
"We will continue to invest in fire trucks and
firefighting equipment to ensure municipalities and
local service districts throughout Newfoundland and
Labrador can provide required fire protection services
for the residents in their respective communities."
The truck purchase is
part of the $1.7 million allocation for fire equipment
in the 2009-10 Municipal Capital Works Program. The
Provincial Government has announced in excess of $1.3
million in fire trucks and equipment in communities
throughout the province this year alone.
