Pasadena to Participate in Pilot Project in Support of Improvements
to Municipal Water Supply Systems
A municipal capital works investment of approximately $110,000 will
support a pilot project in Pasadena to develop a maintenance assurance
manual which may ultimately enable communities throughout Newfoundland
and Labrador to manage their water systems more effectively.
"This initiative is intended to provide additional tools and
resources to municipalities, and help improve operations and maintenance
of water supply systems province-wide," said the Honourable Dianne
Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs. "Access to clean, safe water is
essential and this is important information to ensure water systems
operate in an efficient and reliable manner."
"I am pleased that the Town of Pasadena has been selected from
western Newfoundland as a sponsoring community for this pilot project,"
said the Honourable Tom Marshall, MHA for Humber East. "The development
of the maintenance assurance manual will provide assistance to the town
in the operation and maintenance of their water system and ensure, for
the benefit of Pasadena residents, the system lasts its intended
lifetime."
"I am very pleased that this pilot project will take place in my
district," said Darryl Kelly, MHA for the District of Humber Valley.
"Not only will this project assist the Town of Pasadena in managing
their water systems more effectively, it could potentially be a great
resource for other communities in my district and throughout the
province. As a former mayor and western director with Municipalities
Newfoundland and Labrador, I applaud governments decision to support
this very valuable resource for all municipalities."
In Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong Foundation, the
Provincial Government made an unprecedented multi-year commitment of a
69 per cent increase in municipal capital works funding for fiscal years
2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11. This commitment increased the capital
budget by $34.4 million annually, bringing the total annual Provincial
Government commitment to $84.3 million.
The Provincial Government's infrastructure strategy is valued at more
than $4 billion over the next several years. Provincial infrastructure
projects totaling $1.6 billion will be tendered this fiscal year,
creating an estimated 15,000 jobs (some seasonal) and providing
significant economic stimulus to the economy of Newfoundland and
Labrador.
