Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs May 3-9, is an
opportune time for residents to ensure they are prepared for emergencies
said the Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Municipal Affairs and
Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services-Newfoundland and
Labrador.
"Emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility
among all levels of government," said Minister Whalen. "But ultimately,
emergency preparedness starts at home. Emergencies can strike at any
time and anywhere, often with little or no notice. Whether youre eight
or 80, everyone has a role to play in becoming better prepared."
Emergency Preparedness Week is designed to heighten
awareness and encourage Newfoundlanders and Labradorians to take
concrete actions to be better prepared for a range of emergencies.
Taking a few simple steps to be ready for emergencies and disasters may
indeed save your life.
Know the risks. Although the consequences of
disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to
communities and regions can help residents better prepare.
Make a plan. It's easy and essential. Every
household needs an emergency plan. It will help families know
what to do if disaster strikes.
Get a kit. Find out what goes into an
emergency kit, or where to buy one. An emergency kit helps
ensure families are ready to cope on their own for at least the
first 72 hours of an emergency.
