The Alpine Development Alliance is
undertaking upgrades to facilities and ski terrain at
the White Hills Ski Resort in Clarenville to improve the
overall skier experience and operational efficiencies.
"Today, I am pleased to announce the
Provincial Governments $100,000 contribution towards
upgrades of the White Hills Ski Resort," said the
Honourable Shawn Skinner, Minister of Innovation, Trade
and Rural Development. "In its 20 years of operation,
the resort has become a prominent tourism attraction in
the area providing direct and in-direct economic
opportunities. The current work will contribute to
improving the skiing experience and to the resorts
long-term viability."
Renovations will include new siding
for the exterior of the rental and day lodge located at
the base of the hill and the removal of overgrown brush
from the ski trails, reducing operational costs such as
snowmaking. Additionally, new highway and trail signage,
as well as improvements to the resorts web cam
capability will enhance its marketing activities.
"White Hills has been very successful
in drawing many individuals and groups to this region
from across the province," said the Honourable Ross
Wiseman, MHA, Trinity North. "School groups from as far
as Conne River, Gander, Lewisporte, Fogo, Marystown and
the entire Avalon Peninsula come to White Hills whenever
possible. The White Hills Ski Resort provides economic
benefits to a number of tourism-related businesses in
the accommodation, food, and recreational sectors. This
activity complements other initiatives that are underway
including the areas winter tourism strategy."
The Alpine Development Alliance
Corporation is a non-profit organization that operates
the White Hills Ski Resort in Clarenville. The alliance
consists of such community organizations as the
Discovery Regional Development Board, Town of
Clarenville, along with other interested groups and
individuals.
"This investment will be used to
provide some much needed infrastructure and capital
upgrades to the resorts buildings, equipment, and land
development," said Corwin Mill, Chair, Alpine
Development Alliance. "These additions will help ensure
the resorts continued success by providing ongoing
operating efficiencies and overall support for the
programs and services it provides."
This initiative was funded through the
Regional/Sectoral Diversification Fund (RSDF), which
through Budget 2009: Building on Our Strong
Foundation was increased to an $8 million fund.
Administered by the Department of Innovation, Trade and
Rural Development, the RSDF provides non-repayable
contributions to economic development agencies for
initiatives that address regional and sectoral
development and diversification.
