Provincial Government Continues Support of Student Cooking Competition

The Provincial Government is again making a contribution of $10,000 to the third annual Student Seafood Cooking Competition. As in previous years, the competition is sponsored by the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Chefs Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. The competition is being held February 21 at the College of the North Atlantic, St. Johns campus in the Bistro Restaurant. The winner of the competition will be given an opportunity to showcase the winning dish at the International Boston Seafood Show.

"It is a pleasure for my department to sponsor this competition every year," said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture. "It highlights the quality of our locally produced seafood and the talent of the competitors. I understand that the students and their teachers prepare very high quality seafood that is worthy of any high end restaurant."

The $10,000 contribution is being provided through the departments Market Development Program. The contribution is used to assist with the general organization of the event and to fund prizes. As in previous years, each competitor will prepare an appetizer and main course using the designated Newfoundland and Labrador seafood products. For the appetizer they will be required to use blue mussels. For the main course they will be using cooked and peeled coldwater shrimp and yellowtail flounder. This will provide a wide selection of dishes that showcase the taste and versatility of Newfoundland and Labradors mussels, shrimp and flounder products.

Five teams from across the province have entered this years competition. Each team includes a student and teacher.

The judging and awarding of prizes is scheduled to take place from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. At the conclusion of the judging and awarding of prizes, all those participating will be given an opportunity to view and sample the dishes prepared during the competition. Cash and cookware prizes will also be awarded to the runners-up.

"I wish all the competitors the best of luck during the competition," said Minister Hedderson. "I very much look forward to sampling all the dishes that the competitors prepare."

The International Boston Seafood Show will take place in Boston, Massachusetts from March 15-17, 2008. The winning team will showcase their dishes at the Newfoundland and Labrador opening reception on March 14 and also at the provincial exhibit for the seafood show.
