Premier Williams to Attend Governors Global
Climate Summit 2 On the Road to Copenhagen

The Honourable Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, will travel to Los Angeles, California, September 30-October 2, to attend the Governors Global Climate Summit 2- On the Road to Copenhagen.

Following last years successful summit, the Governors Global Climate Summit 2 will be hosted by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor of California, along with other United States governors in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme. The summit will provide important networking opportunities and information to stimulate economic growth, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, produce green jobs, encourage clean energy, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

The Governors Global Climate Summit 2 offers an invaluable opportunity to showcase Newfoundland and Labrador, discuss our climate change plan and endorse our sustainable clean energy resources to the world, said Premier Williams. I am eager to promote our innovative energy plan, Focusing Our Energy, which lays out the plan for future development of our energy resources to achieve two fundamental objectives: economic self-reliance and environmental sustainability. Another core component of our energy plan is to use our non-renewable resource revenue to fuel a renewable future for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. There is no better green project in North America than the Lower Churchill, and I will be promoting it along with innovative work being done in Ramea with wind-hydrogen-diesel technology.

The summit aims to bring together representatives from businesses, environmental non-governmental organizations, subnational governments, the media, academia and global diplomats to discuss approaches to climate change in advance of the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.

Premier Williams will be a panelist at the plenary session, Driving Technological Innovation and Economic Growth. Joining Premier Williams on the panel will be Governor Schwarzenegger and industry executives.

This is a tremendous opportunity to strengthen existing partnerships, build cooperation and share ideas on global climate change, said Premier Williams. It is crucial that we unite as stewards of the environment to share information on best practices and develop lasting solutions to our global environmental challenges.

Topics to be covered at the Summit include: black carbon; public health; transportation; carbon offsets; water resources; monitoring-reporting-verification; and agriculture and forestry; among others.
