The Honourable Charlene Johnson, Minister of
Environment and Conservation, has announced the following events
relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental
Protection Act.
UNDERTAKING REGISTERED:
Big Cook's Pond (Corner Brook) Cottage Development
Plan (Resubmission)
Proponent: Land Management Division
(Reg. 1417)
The Land Management Division of the Department of
Environment and Conservation proposes to develop approximately 25 remote
recreational cottage lots within the Big Cook's Pond Cottage Planning
Area. The Big Cook's Pond Cottage Planning Area is situated
approximately 14 kilometres southwest of the City of Corner Brook.
Direct passenger vehicle access to the lots is not allowed because 20 of
the lots are adjacent to the T'Railway Provincial Park, where vehicular
access is not permitted. The remaining five lots are only
accessible by walking, boat, snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle. The
planning area comprises approximately 2,000 hectares. The total land
area to be developed is 10 ha. Development of cottage lots will be
undertaken by individual owners once allocation has been completed.
The undertaking was registered on April 2, 2009; public comments are
due by May 11, 2009; and the minister's decision is due on May 17, 2009.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PLAN ACCEPTED AS
SATISFACTORY:

The minister has determined that the Environmental
Protection Plan dated March 10, 2009, is satisfactory. This plan was
required as one of the conditions of release announced on August 26,
2008.
ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE APPOINTED:

Proponent: Nalcor Energy (Reg. 1407)
On March 23, 2009, the minister advised the proponent
that an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) is required for this
project. An Environmental Assessment Committee has now been appointed to
provide scientific and technical advice to the minister and to prepare
draft guidelines for conducting the EIS. The Assessment Committee has
