St. Barbe Area Can Look Forward to Better Driving Conditions

Drivers in the St. Barbe region are the latest beneficiaries of the 2008-09 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

The Honourable Dianne Whalen, Minister of Transportation and Works, announced today $750,000 for road enhancements in the area.

"This government endeavors to provide a safe, reliable transportation network across the province, especially in rural Newfoundland and Labrador," said Minister Whalen. "The fact that over 90 per cent of this years $73 million in road funding will be spent in rural areas is evidence of that commitment."

Road worked planned for the St. Barbe region includes,

  • Recap local roads at Three Mile Rock;
  • Recap local roads at Belburns; and,
  • Recap Bayview Road in Hawkes Bay.

In addition to funding under the Provincial Roads Improvement Program, the province, along with the Federal Government, will cost-share $10.8 million on a 50-50 basis to construct and pave the Daniels Harbour Bypass, as well as resurface sections of Route 430, from Daniels Harbour to River of Ponds and at St. Pauls.

"This is another significant investment in infrastructure that substantially improves road conditions in my district. The improvements we have seen over the past few years in terms of road infrastructure, along with this years investment will improve travel conditions for the people in my district and the economy," said St. Barbe MHA Wallace Young. "The needs of this district are being heard and addressed."

The Provincial Roads Improvement Program will create an estimated 1,400 person years of employment and is part of the Provincial Governments infrastructure strategy.
