Increased Support Provided for Recreation Infrastructure

Community-based recreation organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit from increased funding provided through the 2008 Community Capital Grant Program, which provides grants of up to $15,000 to assist in the upgrade and maintenance of small-scale indoor and outdoor recreation infrastructure.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was in Carbonear today to announce more than 40 province-wide projects approved under the $600,000 program, which was launched in 2007 as part of the provinces recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador.

"In this, the second year of the Community Capital Grant Program, we have increased the maximum grant amount to $15,000 and increased the total allocation to the program by $200,000," said Minister Jackman. "This years funding will build on our 2007 investment in community recreational infrastructure bringing the total invested through this program over the last two years to $1 million."

Minister Jackman said the Provincial Government recognizes that communities are the primary delivery agencies for recreation and sport programs and services and that this years increased funding is designed to further support community efforts to address infrastructure issues.

The Honourable Jerome Kennedy, MHA for Carbonear-Harbour Grace, noted the $15,000 provided to upgrade change room facilities at the Carbonear swimming pool is an excellent example of how these grants can be used to improve and maintain community-based recreational facilities.

"The Carbonear swimming pool is a centre of activity in the community and this upgrade will enhance access for all area residents," said Minister Kennedy. "A healthy population is an objective I support, and by improving the Carbonear pool we ensure recreational opportunities are available and encourage people to participate in an active lifestyle."

Projects funded under the Community Capital Grant Program include upgrades to soccer and softball fields, replacement of community playground equipment, roof repairs, and general upgrades and repairs to buildings and infrastructure.

A complete list of approved projects is listed below.
