The Rooms Celebrates One of its Own

Greg Walsh, Director of The Rooms Provincial Archives, has been recognized as Memorial Universitys 2008 Alumni Horizon Award Recipient for Outstanding Achievement Under the Age of 35.

The Honourable Clyde Jackman, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation today joined Dean Brinton, Chief Executive Officer of The Rooms, in congratulating Mr. Walsh on his achievement.

"Having worked closely with Mr. Walsh on issues related to the cultural sector, I can attest to his exemplary professionalism," said Minister Jackman. "It is no surprise to me that he has been recognized for his achievements by Memorial University. "

The Alumni Horizon Award honours young alumni from Memorial University who have realized extraordinary achievements before the age of 35. Mr. Walsh was cited for his dedicated efforts in heritage preservation, outstanding professional success as an archivist, as well as being an accomplished musician.

A graduate of Memorial University (1997), Mr. Walsh, at 32, became the youngest provincial archivist in Newfoundland and Labrador and, to date, the youngest in Canada. His passion for preserving Newfoundland and Labradors archival and cultural heritage is formidable. He is deeply involved with many professional organizations including the Council of Provincial and Territorial Archivists, the Association of Newfoundland and Labrador Archives, and the Association of Canadian Archivists.

Mr. Walsh is not only an esteemed director and a respected archivist; he is also a gifted musician and composer, playing a multitude of instruments including the fiddle, guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, as well as the accordion. He is a member of the American Federation of Musicians, the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Arts Council, and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada. He has performed at numerous fundraising events for local charities and foundations.
